Happy New Year

Since now is the time to reflect on the past and look toward the future I'll reflect on my past for a moment.  I helped SCD compile a lot of checklists for the "bible" way back in 1987 all with photocopying and hand written checklists you can see my name in the acknowledgment section in I believe in every edition.  That is something I still do today pass along information to Bob Lemke in the never ending quest to checklist everything :>.  It is something I take up more of in my other blog http://uncatalogedbaseballcards.blogspot.com/

Many may not know I was first published by Baseball Cards magazine way back in 1990 Jan issue with my what at the time I thought a complete Pete Rose checklist.  Before the internet and Google era I think it was OK for a 19 year old it had about 600 items listed.  All originally typed out no spreadsheet or computer sorting.  Pretty laughable by today's checklist I keep 4,358 items of which most are pictured on the site 4192cards.com

As for the future I hope to continue on in both aspects checklisting everything and growing the sites with more scans.  I am constantly amazed I can still find things I've never seen before or even heard of before and even more so when I know that something should exist but has never been seen to come across it in person.  The hunt for cards is a deep deep sickness, I believe, but it seems to occupy my time in semi productive manner than some other vises out there.

So I hope everyone met their collecting goals for 2010 and has new ones for 2011.

Pete at the game 11th

Pete Rose stood on first base Saturday night and tipped his cap to a screaming crowd - just like he did 25 years ago when he broke the major-league hit record. A few hours later, Rose broke down in tears at the end of a laugh-filled roast and repented for betting on baseball.

Reds to honor Pete Rose on 25th anniversary of hit record

Big announcement today more to be finalized -

The Reds will honor Pete Rose at Great American Ball Park on the 25th anniversary of Rose breaking baseball's all-time hits record, according to The Cincinnati Enquirer.

Reds CEO Bob Castellini told the newspaper that the organization received the approval from commissioner Bud Selig to honor Rose, who is banned from baseball.

This will mark the first time since his lifetime banishment that Rose will be honored on the field in Cincinnati.
The newspaper noted that the ceremony likely won't take place on the exact anniversary (Sept. 11) of Rose's 4,192nd hit because Rose has a prior commitment to Hollywood Casino that day. Instead, the ceremony might take place Sept. 12.

Rose, still the majors' all-time hits leader, finished his 24-season career with 4,256 hits, a .303 average, 160 homers and 1,314 RBIs. He spent 19 of those seasons with the Reds.

4,192 movie on TV sort of

Producers of the new Pete Rose documentary, “4,192: The Crowning Of The Hit King,”  are making a one-hour special to air on WXIX-TV Friday, Aug. 20. Channel 19 says the one-hour “4,192″ special will be produced by Covington’s Barking Fish Entertainment, and that the producers’ goal is to “build interest to come and see the film.”

4192 Hit King Movie

Got to go to the premier and while the people running and organizing were a tad disorganized the movie itself exceeded my expectations of it and even my wife enjoyed it.  For those that missed it they are trying to get it in a few more theaters but doubt it will play much outside of Ohio market, but they are trying to get it on TV and it does come out on video Sept 14.  Be sure to checkout the credits might see a few names you recognize.

And not to play spoiler but Pete does get hit 4192 :> For more picture go to 4192movie facebook page link.

Batty Pete II

Here's a good interview from Ken Broo and Chuck Lumb on the corked bat that surfaced that outlines the issues pretty clearly.  Starts on 7/18 Hour 2.

1976 Hostess

Been working on a hostess checklist for awhile now and still not close to finished but wanted to share some quirks of the 76 set and variations.  They were issued on East coast, northeast, and west coast and Rose is known to be on the Twinkies, Cupcakes, and Ho-Hos boxes.  There are 2 semi interesting variations and maybe more the Twinkies boxes on the east coast are 13 oz on the west coast must put more filling in them they are 15 oz.  Another East/West coast variety in general the L panels show up on cupcake boxes on the east coast but the straight 3 panels on the west I've never seen a 76 Rose L panel so this seems to not be for every cupcake box anyone have one?

But onto the real reason there is a picture variation on the Rose and most likely every card as detailed on Bob Lemke's Blog awhile ago.  I broke out and scanned my Twinkies and Ho-Hos box and there in lies the variation.  The Ho-Hos picture is cropped longer the peaks on Cincinnati on the jersey shows 4 peaks both NN I believe.  While on the Twinkies there are only 3 peaks.

A super minor variation that won't set the world on fire but for the Rose collector with everything there's a new thing to go after.

66/67 Bazookas

Can you tell the difference in the 2 Roses?

the one on the top is a 1966 the other 1967 it was always told in the checklist they are identical just the panels had different players on them (the slight color difference is just in how they scanned FYI).  But taking a closer look at the bottom picture cropping the 67 has about 2 or 3 pixel columns missing.  The letter above his bat on the sign is a B or E is clear in the 66 but just the left side of it is visible in the 67.

This cropping does appear on the others players on the Rose panel between 66 and 67 and my guess the entire set but haven't verified that as these are tough to find in any year as a panel or even the box.  Doubt PSA will relabel any of them as without both to compare you'd never know.

Batty Pete

I'm going to refrain from talking too much about the corked bat news except to state the deadspin article really didn't do anything eye opening.  All it proves is Pete held that bat at sometime on the on deck circle.  Did he knowingly cork the bat?  Or even was that bat corked at the time?  Did he knowing swing that bat in a live game?  Until you show me Pete swinging a bat and it breaking open like Sosa did awhile ago nothing really newsworthy.  While yes I'm bias and give Rose the benefit of the doubt corked or not still extremely difficult to get 4256 hits.

Which bring us to bat 4256 his last hit is up for auction at Lelands.  Opening bid $75,000 should be interesting to see the finial hammer price.

Interview about Pete

Here is a nice podcast about the Reds and Pete of course check it out http://www.baseballphd.net/ interview of Chris Eckes of the Reds HOF.  Also scroll lower about GABP not sure if this is really true seems a stretch but Great American Ballpark pays a quiet tribute to Rose each night.  Past the center field fence lies two smoke stacks.  Each smoke stack has seven baseball bats which total fourteen, Rose’s number.

Some new stuff and additions to the website.  I added a checklist sub section to non pictured page to show the checklist cards Rose appears on not exactly a sexy item but still something to go after.

Also the previous 1964-1965 Reds postcards can be split into 2 years as the 1964 is blank backed and the 1965 contains the postcard back.

Went and saw the Hit King Camaro in person over the weekend and entered for the chance to win I didn't :<.  But if you like cars it is a beauty they said for another $20,000 in options can make it a speed demon.  Really how could you drive a car like this normally I'd need a car cover with me and have to park mile away in parking lots.  Hoping they sell just the accessories for the car or wait until 1 unlucky person totals one and parts out the car.

Checklist

Ever wonder how close I'm too completeness?  I did my checklist of Rose items with his likeness on them which I don't include the game cards or non pictured items in my count stands at 2,246 this also excludes the publications (1,387).  Of that count I'm only missing 165 scans or I have almost 93%.  Of the 165 missing items a lot of them are rated on my rarity scale of 1-5 most fall in the 1 to 2 range.  And of those there are a lot of store display pieces missing I'd really like to get those pictures so if you have anything even 1 scan of the rare odd ball item I'd love to see it.  Who doesn't want to see Pete holding a doughnut for the WaWa store?

Finest Graded Rookie

If you haven't been over to REA auction you should they have some of the rarest cards up for auction and this stunning 63 Topps Rookie looks like it just came off the line hard to believe that was in a pack.  I'm not a big graded card guy I like my cards to show a little love but this card is amazing in color and centering.  Only at $11,000 with 16 days to go so plenty of time to sell off some other cards and get some funds together to make a run at it.

Happy Birthday Pete

Pete's 69 today how time flies.  Happy Birthday to you and many more to come.  I noticed something yesterday that I can guarantee will never happen in baseball history again I'm willing to bet my 1963 Rookie card on it.  No player will ever hit his 4,000th hit on the exact date as his #1 hit that all happened yesterday the 13th.  A pretty safe bet as the 4,000 hit club seems pretty safe at 2 members for the foreseeable future.  Only player I could see getting close would have been Ichiro if he played his entire career in the US.1,278 japan hits + as of 12th 2,038 mlb hits = 3,316 hits at age 37 impressive a tad ahead of Roses pace.

Enjoy the day and send Pete a birthday greeting.

Hit #1 4/13/1963

I forgot to mention on the 8th was Pete's first at bat a walk off Earl Francis he then went 0-11 until the 13th where he promptly got hit #1 a triple off Bob Friend and the race was on to 4,256.  Below is my autograph of all the pitchers (un)lucky to have given up a significant milestone in the race to 4,256.
